What are the best places in Key West to snorkel?

I will be in Key West for 5 or 6 hours on tour from Miami. I may bring my own snorkel gear. I'm just curious about what is the best part of the island to snorkel? Are there cheap boat cruises or ferries that take you to open ocean or nearby reefs?

actually the snorkeling right around key west kind of sucks--really bad....the water is not very clear(because of high boat traffic), the coral is not very vibrant and the fish arent very diverse or plentiful---mind you that this is all in comparison to other places i've snorkeled like the bahamas and hawaii--after being in those 2 places i was very dissapointed with key west snorkeling...i did use a charter($30) for the snorkeling tour... the one good area around key west (its 70 miles away by ferry so not even close) is dry tortuga national park--the only way to get to it is by ferry from key west--but its not cheap and with only 5 hours its not an option for you----i would recommend a kayak tour or self guided kayak rental around the mangrove islands instead of a snorkel trip
