Still confused about snorkeling in Cozumel?

All I hear is snorkeling in Cozumel is the best. After researching I've concluded that: Colombia Shallows, Chankanab, Paraiso Reef, The Junk Yard, and Palancar Reef are decent for snorkeling. Am I missing any???? Another dillema: Since I'm bringing my own mask and fins, can I hop into the water and snorkel these destinations? But from my research I think I have to join an expensive tour and get boated to a snorkel destination... What's the deal??? Well, if I were to pick a tour group, I've concluded that Aldora, Equalizers, and Scuba Du are decent. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

I've been to Mexico (Cozumel included) many times, and what my family has done is either go snorkeling unprofessionally in the water near the hotel/resort or get boated on a tour. I'm pretty sure there's nothing like safety precautions holding you back from just hopping into the ocean somewhere and going snorkeling (Mexico is pretty lax about all of that legal stuff), but the tours will most likely give you a better, albeit less adventurous, experience.

Scuba and Snorkeling Diving: What Makes Them Different?

Chances are unless you are very familiar with each activity; you probably don't know how scuba diving differs from snorkeling diving. Many people are mistaken and use the terms interchangeably. The activities are unlike for each diver. Scuba diving and snorkeling are very different, although they are very much alike as they seem.

Skill Set

According to some people, the ability to swim is not a need for either snorkeling or scuba diving. On the other hand, others say that it would be a foolishness to go in the ocean without knowing how to swim. Others who are saying swimming skills are not necessary might be because of the snorkeling and scuba gears. A wetsuit or vest can be purchased by an inexperienced swimmer that could help him to remain buoyant. The wetsuit and vest may help with buoyancy in keeping you safe in really deep water thus you should trust it.

For most children, snorkeling is the easiest to learn. Bathtub can be a good spot to start practicing. They can practice using the mask as well as proper breathing. Being under the water at 30 minutes at a time is involved in snorkeling. These are easy to practice at home unlike the ones for scuba diving.

Basic Activity

Snorkeling is a laid back way of viewing underwater life. You put on a snorkel, fin and mask and float face down while watching marine life. Because of the ease of the activity, some say that snorkeling is much easier to study and perform.

Scuba diving is more complex than snorkeling. An air tank is to be worn on back that allows much deeper diving. Although at the bottom there are many marine creatures to witness, you aren't able to spot them all because the sunlight doesn't go to deep depths. Although lights can be carried with you on your dive, it hinders and weighs you down.

Breathing

Breathing is also much different for each diver. An oxygen tank is involved to go down to deep levels where you are completely under water. Whereas in snorkeling, 30 minutes at a time is the period allowable. Real surface air is utilized via your snorkel.

Equipment

Equipment as well is also different for each diver. Oxygen tank, wet suit, and other items are required for a successful scuba dive. However, only fins, snorkel, and a mask are necessary when snorkeling. In addition, it has been argued that it is better to have the simplest gear. There are many divers that still prefer for best equipment available though.

You'll surely have loads of fun no matter what type of diving you choose to do, either scuba diving or snorkeling. Many people confuse and interchange the names in error. Scuba diving is more generic which could be the main reason why it is usually identified more than snorkeling. Although there are different tasks for each type of diver; scuba diving and snorkeling diving are very alike as well. Snorkeling is much easier to perform, but you can always do scuba diving once you really feel certain in the water.
