Why does this diver doesn't use a regulator mouth piece?

I have an friend and she is an diver and she dives to catch fishes & pearls. She showed me an picture of her diving but how come she did not have a regulator mouth piece ? She was only wearing an face mask and she putted an air hose in her mouth. That is kind of odd. Can anybody tell me why she dives like that ? Is that how they dive in east asia ?

From your description, it's either a snorkel, or a SNUBA type device.

Snuba keeps the tank on the surface, so all you dive with is a regualtor attached to a long hose. You get more freedom of movement, with out all the bulk of scuba gear. BUT, you limited on depth, and distance, by the length of the hose.
