Pink Kettlebells
IN THE PINK
Kettlebells were originally used by Russian strongmen in the 18th Century and, while most modern bells retain the “classic” cannonball-black finish – with an industrial-looking Hammerite-style silver being another popular option – some enterprising manufacturers are now providing more choice when it comes to colour. And, yes, they do come in pink!
Sports equipment with a girlie edge is becoming increasingly common, with everything from dumbells to wetsuits available in varying shades of blush. Journalist Louise Trewavas of Diver magazine identified the Pink Lady – a “species” of female scuba diver whose pink kit has become her trademark. She also noted that, when a girl’s penchant for pink is noticed by her friends, they’ll tend to buy her even more pink equipment as a gift, so her collection will rapidly increase!
But surely pink Kettlebells are, at best, laughable and maybe even a bit of a travesty? Er, no…
Pink is associated with softness and femininity these days, but the origins of this tradition may be surprising. To the Ancient Chinese, pink, being a red-based shade, was regarded as a strong, “yang”, masculine colour. Balance of chi energy was – and still remains – the foundation of health and well-being, and so girls were dressed in pink and had their rooms painted pink, in order to increase their strength and dynamic energy.
While, of course, the view of girls and women as passive, “yin” creatures with their yang in desperate need of a boost would be viewed as an unfounded, sexist generalisation these days, there is still something to be said for the idea that pink can have a positive, uplifting, even a strengthening effect on the mood, spirit and body.
Pink Kettlebells come in 4kg, 6kg and 8kgs and they can inject a bit more fun into your workout and it also gives you an added incentive to train.
